By renting a full-fledged dedicated server (Dedicated), you get a physical machine completely assigned to you. This is usually not the cheapest pleasure, which is why Dedicated is used mainly for large and complex projects. A virtual server or VPS is, by definition, a piece of a physical server. That is, several virtual servers belonging to different clients are launched on one machine. Does this make VPS less attractive than Dedicated?

Depends on the type of virtualization, that is, the technology with which the VPS is implemented. Antler offers OpenVZ and KVM virtualization.

OpenVZ uses one physical server core. It consumes resources to a minimum and has the ability to upgrade without interrupting work. This virtualization is best suited for website hosting. But OpenVZ has a minus - you cannot change the kernel parameters, although this is usually not required for hosting.

KVM implements a complete analogue of a physical server. In Antler, Cloud servers work on this virtualization. You can install OpenVPN or PPTP on them, get full access to sockets and processes. In a word, KVM is suitable for more flexible configuration and changing system parameters to suit your needs.

VPS (Virtual Private Server, virtual dedicated server) is a modern hosting technology that combines the power of a dedicated server with flexibility and ease of management. The closest analogue of VPS is a standard dedicated server located on the technological site of the hosting provider and connected to the Ethernet switch port.

As part of the VPS tariff, the user is provided with a virtual dedicated server located on a separate physical machine, there is access to the system at the root level, which provides the ability to install any programs and change server settings.

Each tariff plan provides a guaranteed minimum of system resources (the amount of allocated RAM and processor power) - under any conditions, the user will receive an amount of resources not less than this guaranteed value.

As a rule, a physical server has a significant reserve of free resources, in which case all of them are at your disposal. On VPS tariff plans, the user has access to the server at the root level and receives full server administration rights, except for direct access to the equipment and actions at the operating system kernel level.

Compared to shared hosting, this provides the following benefits:

the ability to install any software and configure any parameters of the system and applications;

the ability to install your own versions of system libraries or change existing ones;

full control over processes, users and files in the system;

the ability to host an unlimited number of sites, databases, domain zones, organizing access for any number of users (VPS is limited only by system resources, depending on the selected VPS tariff plan).

You can install and configure additional software either through a software management system (RPM) or by compiling from source at the root superuser level.
